🌐 Open Knowledge License: ODbL + DBCL
TaxisBase is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL): http://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1.0/. Any rights in individual contents of the database are licensed under the Database Contents License (DBCL): http://opendatacommons.org/licenses/dbcl/1.0/
ODbL + DBCL covers TaxisBase as a database and structured knowledge collection.
TaxisBase is an open collaborative knowledge base containing a core system bootstrap ontology, extensible type system, semantic relationships, constraints, domain/range definitions, and asserted atomic facts for entity types and instances.
TaxisBase defines the canonical knowledge model used by TaxisDB, including the TBox/ABox structure, multidimensional data organization, indexing model, temporal semantics, and database structures.
TaxisDB is the implementation engine; TaxisBase is the database model and knowledge content.
Use, extend, and share TaxisBase freely. Keep the knowledge base open.

- Frequently Asked Questions
✅ You CAN:
- 🧪 Use TaxisBase for evaluation, research, prototyping, and production
- 🏢 Use TaxisBase internally within your organization
- 🛠 Modify the ontology, schema, and knowledge model
- ➕ Add new entity types, attributes, constraints, and relationships
- 📚 Populate TaxisBase with your own entities and asserted facts (datoms)
- 📦 Redistribute TaxisBase and adapted versions under ODbL terms
- 💼 Use TaxisBase commercially in accordance with ODbL and DBCL
📜 ODbL Covers
The database as a whole, including its organization and knowledge model:
- 🧩 Bootstrap ontology
- 🏛 TBox (entity types, attributes, ontology definitions)
- 📖 ABox (assertion model)
- 🗂 Database organization on multi-dimensional sparse associative arrays
- 🔎 Primary and secondary index structures
- 🔄 Transaction-aware organization
- 🕒 Temporal and historical semantics
- 🏗 Supporting database structures (e.g. logger, keywords)
📜 DBCL Covers
The individual contents stored within TaxisBase, including:
- 🧬 Bootstrap metadata
- 🏷 Core system vocabulary
- 🧱 Atomic and composite value types
- 📑 Enumerated value types and values
- 🔑 System attributes
- 🏛 Abstract types
- 📘 Entity type definitions
- 🔗 Relationships and constraints
- 📐 Domain and range definitions
- 📄 Entity instances
- ⚛ Asserted atomic facts (datoms)
- 🤝 Community-contributed knowledge
🔄 Share-Alike
If you publicly distribute an adapted TaxisBase database, you must comply with the ODbL Share-Alike requirements.
This means adapted versions of TaxisBase must remain available under ODbL, together with the required attribution and licensing notices.
❌ ODbL + DBCL DO NOT Cover
These licenses do not apply to software components, including:
- ⚙️ TaxisDB database engine
- 💾 YottaDB storage engine
Software licensing is separate:
TaxisDB Engine → SSPLv1
YottaDB Engine → GNU AGPL v3.0
™ Trademarks
ODbL and DBCL do not grant rights to use:
- TaxisDB name
- TaxisBase name
- Official logos
- Project branding
Trademark rights remain with the project owner.
Proprietary extensions
ODbL/DBCL do not grant:
- Ownership of TaxisBase
- Rights to claim official TaxisBase status
- Rights to use Taxis trademarks
- Commercial endorsement
🧭 Quick Decision Guide
IF you use TaxisBase internally
→ No publication required
IF you extend the ontology
→ You may keep modifications private unless you publicly distribute
the adapted database
IF you add new types, attributes, entities or facts
→ They become part of your adapted TaxisBase database
IF you publicly distribute an adapted TaxisBase database
→ ODbL Share-Alike obligations apply
IF you redistribute TaxisBase contents
→ DBCL applies to the individual contents
IF you use TaxisDB software
→ SSPLv1 applies to the engine
📌 Summary Box
ODbL + DBCL
• ODbL licenses TaxisBase as an open collaborative database.
• DBCL licenses the individual contents stored within TaxisBase.
• Anyone may use, modify, extend, and redistribute TaxisBase.
• Publicly distributed adapted databases must comply with ODbL
attribution and Share-Alike requirements.
• TaxisDB software is licensed separately under SSPLv1.
